Have you tried roo yet?

By Ben (Discover English Teacher)

This might be weird. I am encouraging you to eat one of Australia’s most famous national animals: kangaroo or ‘roo’ for short! You have to try it while you’re in Australia. It is cheap and delicious. You do NOT have to pay big money for kangaroo. You should be able to try kangaroo meat for a very reasonable price.

Kangaroo meat is tender and strong-flavoured. Some people find the taste and smell very strong, but I think it is very good. If you are having a kangaroo steak, it should be cooked rare (this means that it isn’t cooked much). If it is cooked for too long, it becomes dry and tough. Sometimes, kangaroo steaks are served with a sweet sauce, and this can be very delicious. One time, I even ate kangaroo with a chocolate sauce!

If you are unsure about eating kangaroo meat, I would recommend starting with a kangaroo souvlaki from the Abbey Road Café in St Kilda. This is a little bit expensive as it costs $27. It is a nice café and there are a lot of other food options.

Another option is the Edinburgh Castle Hotel in Brunswick. You can order Peppered Kangaroo Fillet for just $18. The Ed also has a Monday ‘roo and red wine’ special for two people. You can get 2 roo steaks and a bottle of red wine for only $45. If you haven’t been to Brunswick, I’d recommend taking the number 19 tram to Sydney Rd to sample the interesting feel of Brunswick. There are Middle-Eastern eateries, nightclubs, record and book shops, and endless pubs and restaurants. After taking in Brunswick, continue to the Ed to have some roo for dinner. If you go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, you could check out some African music at Bar Oussou after dinner which is located right near the Ed.

You can also buy roo steaks and sausages very cheaply from the supermarket or butcher. You can cook it on the barbecue or the stove. Look up the instructions online. Another delicious idea is to stir-fry kangaroo meat in a Chinese style with ginger and spring onions. Here’s a recipe. Remember not to overcook it!

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy eating our national icon!
