Goodbye Kiss.

By Eric (Discover English Teacher)

Usually, parting is a sorrowful affair – waving goodbye to loved-ones as they leave our lives, tears filling our eyes as we think back on all the wonderful times we shared.

But saying goodbye to 2020 is going to be the happiest part of this entire woe-begotten year.  I’m going to take 2020 in my hands, look it in its pale, watery, disease ridden eyes, summon all the Don Corleone gravitas I can muster, and kiss this bi*^$ @#$t full on the lips.  The kiss of death, so that we both know there’s no coming back.

It will be joyous.

Because we’ve all endured so much this year.  Every one of us has had to deal with the personal repercussions of a year that began with the eastern half of Australia burning so intensely you could see it from space; and 2020 did not let up for so much as a single moment.  Fire, plague, riots, geo-political tension, crumbling rule of law, hurricanes, typhoons, poverty, hunger, misery.  Even UFOs at one point.

I think we all deserve a pat on the back for surviving.

And after almost an entire year trapped in our bedrooms, with only our deteriorating mental health to tell us time was passing, we can finally socialise again.  So grab a drink and some friends, and cheers each other loudly.  Perhaps we shouldn’t hug just yet, but we can look our friends in the eye without the low-res middleman of a webcam and tell each other that we’re here, we care, we’re alive.

It’s going to be blissful.

So have a wonderful holiday period everyone!  Let’s enjoy the relief that comes from seeing a sliver of light appear on the horizon, the warm hope of 2021 thawing our hearts and souls.

And holy moly, I really hope 2021 is a good year for all of us!
