DISCOVER MELBOURNE

Most Liveable City in the World

Melbourne was voted the Most Liveable City in the World for five consecutive years from 2011 to 2015. It is situated on Port Philip Bay which offers excellent swimming and water sport options. Melbourne is surrounded by parks and gardens: the city is organised, clean, safe and is serviced by an extensive public transport system of trains, trams and buses.

Food

The city is often referred to as the coffee capital of Australia due to its extensive café and restaurant culture. Melbourne is also a deeply multicultural city with a long tradition of embracing other cultures which means that you can eat great food from all over the world.

Economy and Employment

Melbourne has a strong growth economy with an unemployment rate, in inner Melbourne, of between 3 - 4%. It is very common for international students with working rights to find employment opportunities in Melbourne’s extensive cafe, restaurant and bar culture.

Sport

Melburnians like to think that Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world. Melbourne is one of only four cities in the world to host a grand slam event for professional tennis.  Melbourne is also the home of Australian football and boasts 9 professional clubs. Australian football is unlike any other football code and it is great fun to choose a team and attend a game.

Arts and Culture

Melbourne prides itself on being the cultural capital of Australia. It has a vibrant arts scene with numerous galleries, concert halls and museums of varying sizes. Many galleries and museums are free to students. Melbourne also has an unusual architectural heritage featuring a unique blend of Western European neoclassicism and experimental postmodernism.

Climate

Melbourne’s weather is officially called ‘temperate,’ however, what everyone knows about Melbourne is that it's weather is unbelievably changeable. You may need a good sunhat and sunscreen, umbrella, scarf, warm hat and swimming costume all in the one day. Melbourne is generally hot in the summer and cool in the winter – ski fields are a 3 hour drive from the city.
