Amazing places – Bruny Island
By Ben (Discover English Teacher)
You have probably heard of Tasmania, but you may not have heard of Bruny Island. Bruny Island is an island that is located off the south coast of Tasmania. You need to take a car ferry to get to the island, and the ferry is accessible from Peppermint Bay, a 30-minute drive from Hobart. You’ll need a car to get around the island. You can arrange a hire car quite cheaply online before you go. Don’t hire one at the airport when you arrive unless you want to pay a lot of money!
It is an amazingly beautiful place. It is clean and there is very little pollution. There are many great walks you can do, animals to see and beautiful beaches to swim at in summer. You can stay overnight and eat delicious local food.
Bruny Island is famous for its oysters. The sea is so clean that it produces some of the best oysters in Australia. You can try some oysters at the Get Shucked Oyster Bar. There are many other nice local foods to eat on Bruny Island.
North and South Bruny Islands are separated by a very thin strip of land, known as the Neck, where you might be able to see Little Penguins coming home to their burrows in the evening.
There is a beautiful old lighthouse at the bottom of South Bruny Island – the Cape Bruny Lighthouse – which is great to visit at sunset as there are spectacular views.
There are a number of fantastic walks you can do on Bruny Island. Some of the walks are quite long and hard. Remember that you will need to carry food and water, wear comfortable shoes, bring warm clothes and a raincoat, and wear a hat. When I was there, I did two walks, one at Cape Queen Elizabeth and one at East Cloudy Head. The East Cloudy Head walk was difficult but very beautiful. It takes around 4 hours and the track is a bit rough!
Visit Tasmania and Bruny Island if you have the time and money before you go back home. It is well worth it.
