Rockmelon Rocks

One of my favourite fruits is rockmelon or cantaloupe. In some ways, it is nothing special; it’s not intensely sweet and delicious like a mango. It is quite subtle and doesn’t really have a strong flavour.
It is made up of 90% water, which is perhaps why I like it in summer. It is really thirst-quenching and a great food to eat to prevent dehydration. I like to have some cold rockmelon cut up in the fridge for a snack on a hot day.
Rockmelon has a lot of other health benefits as well. In France, they often serve rockmelon as a starter because it helps you to digest your food. It contains a lot of fibre so it also prevents constipation.
It can help you go to sleep because it contains a nutrient called choline. It is also good for pregnant women because it contains folate, a very important nutrient for the development of the baby in the womb.
Rockmelons are in season now, and you can buy them very cheaply at the Queen Victoria Market. You might even be able to find one for $1. I hear that they cost a lot more in Japan!
Here’s an unusual rockmelon salad idea. It beautifully combines the saltiness of prosciutto with the freshness of the rockmelon.
